Can someone please tell me what an Obsidian Tank is and why he is so desired? I have a decent War/Monk build, but all I am ever asked if I can go Obsidian.
Thanks in Advance!

Wow, way to resurrect a month-and-a-half old thread
An Obsidian tank uses the elemental Earth Magic elite [skill=text]Obsidian Flesh[/skill] to tank in unusually difficult areas such as the Domain of Anguish. In other places such serious tanking is definitely not needed. I don't know the exact build, but one is undoubtedly on PvXwiki.

If anyone asks you to go Obsidian tank, tell them to get screwed and stop sucking at the game. An obsidian tank is never needed anywhere, you're better off getting a much more reliable heros and henchman

Dervishes may tank bettter but the one thing thats different is a dervish is as good as dead if his enchants are stripped however the warrior doesnt use enchants so you havw to beat them by brute force much more challenging

i never quite understood why people like that build, it seems so useless to just stand there and tank, warriors arent for just tanking, they are damage dealers.

Better then being called a nob for running a build that actually kills more then puppies. The only mission where tanks came in handy was shards of orr, and even then I only took balanced stance. People seem to have the wrong idea about tanking, to me it means blocking off monsters from the backline. To other people it means taking 7 extremely suck arse skills and staningd around like a lawn ornament ^^.

Are you serious? Is he serious? [skill]"Watch Yourself!"[/skill] is the way to go for armor.

Yeah. Doylak is only usefull if you are chucking spears. Otherwise, you'll be standing around for twenty seconds unable to catch up to an enemy two feet in front of you.

obsidian tank isn't just for warriors, it's for elementalist's as well. if parties can't get a warrior or dervish to tank for them, having an ele run obsidian tank isn't such a bad idea, is it?
the reason why obsidian tanks are desired by many teams in a lot of tough dungeons is because it less stressful on the healers if the guy who's charging in the take the full brunt of the enemy's damage can take care of himself for the most part of the fights. the idea of the build is more about spell negation than damage reduction, i would like to believe.

The whole point of an obsidian tank is to make it much easier for the AoE damage dealers in a team to do what they do best. It also helps the monks out by focussing their attention onto a single ally instead of the whole group.
The OF tank goes in, gets the attention of the enemy, the melee bunch up around him while the monks help out when needed. The AoE damage dealers then move up (SS, nukers, splinter barragers, etc...) and knock the crap out of the enemy. The tank then moves up to whatever casters are left and repeats. All the time the tank should keep the enemy on his/her far side so he can be healed/proted when needed without risking an aggro break. This also means the ranged attackers on your side can move up and cast without risking much of an aggro break. The difference between a good OF tank and a bad OF tank can be staggering.
Much, much easier to nuke stuff if it's all in one place don't you agree?
An OF tank is only really needed in areas where you are fighting very tough/large groups such as DoA, Slavers Exile, etc.... But then again, not all difficult areas use OF tanks. You'll not see one in Urgoz for example. In the vast majority of the game an OF tank (or any tank for that matter) is more of a hinderance than anything else but in other areas they make very good sense.
An OF tank can turn an impossible aggro into a nukers dream......and what's wrong with that?

That just proves my point even more why a warrior should NEVER go obsidian tank, an elementalist does a far better job since a E/Me can never worry about energy as well as maintain Obsidian Flesh. A warrior is useless once it drops

Obsidian tank is not needed anywhere, in all the examples you quoted you would be better served just taking a standard frontliner who can bodyblock and deal dmg at the same time. Any monk worthy of the name is not going to find it difficult to keep a warrior standing. Furthermore I would sugest that there is absolutley no difference between a "good" and "bad" OF tank, they are all bad beacuse the bar itself is intrinsically bad and only really used by those who have failed to realise the game has moved on from the trinity concept.
Now because I am lazy I will link this excellent article from Avarre as to why this is so, http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10194416
